Higashiyama is a cultural hotspot. It is located at the western foot of Higashiyama Peak in Kyoto City. It includes bustling streets such as Gion but also has many quiet temples including Kiyomizu-ji Temple, Kodaiji Temple, Kenninji and Chishakuin Temple. The Kyoto National Museum is also located in this area.
Due to the historical monuments in the area, the government has protected the Higashiyama district. Subsequently, it is also the city with the least pollution in Kyoto. In mid-March every year, the "Tungshan Lanterns Road" activity is held. There are more than 2,500 lights and paper lanterns from Violet Courtyard to Maruyama Park and Yasaka Shrine.
