Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan 海遊館

Japan’s largest aquarium, and one of the largest public aquariums in the world, is located near Osaka Bay, and a convenient five-minute walk from the Osakako Station on the Osaka Municipal Subway Chuo Line. The aquarium boasts of the rare gigantic whale shark, or jimbeisame, that can otherwise be seen in Okinawa’s Churaumi Aquarium.

Upon entering the building, you will find yourself surrounded by sea creatures walking through the Aqua Gate tunnel. The aquarium consists of 27 tanks and 16 main exhibits with a total volume of nearly 11,000 tons of water, with tanks made of a total of 346 tons of acrylic glass. The thickest pane is around six meters by five meters by thirty centimeters and manages to be firm and sturdy yet transparent for a clear view of the sea creatures in the tank.

The aquarium tanks are designed such that you can view its contents not only from the front but from various angles such as from below or above to be able to observe the sea organisms from different perspectives. The whale shark display is in a gigantic tank 9 meters dee and 34 meters long, filled with 5,400 tons of water.

To end off your visit, you can enjoy a meal with the ocean view at a restaurant within the aquarium!

An amazing aquarium that spans several floors and tanks. A hugely enjoyable part of the Osaka Bay Area.

It was really amazing, they have an impressive amount of fishes. There weren't that many people there but if you wanna watch the otters getting feed grab a spot early!

Absolutely wonderful aquarium, a great place to visit for families, dates, or even by yourself. The whaleshark is incredible as well as the beautiful jellyfish exhibit. There are also interactive areas where you can touch some of the fishes.

Be sure to visit at night, the illumination at night is beautiful! There is a day/night ver. of the aquarium, so I reckon the best time to visit is in the afternoon where the crowd starts to die down and you can have a great view of the different species of fish and animals.
