Ginza is the most famous, old-style commercial district in Tokyo. It is said that this region was part of the ocean, but that after Tokugawa Ieyasu’s land reclamation it became the site of a silver coin mint. Ginza means "silver mint" in Japanese, thus the name Ginza. The Ginza district is hailed as the “Heart of Tokyo”. It is one block with a central street and several bystreets. The central street runs about one mile from the east to the west and closely connects Itchome to Hatchome, and these are often collectively referred to as “the Ginza Hatcho”.
Ginza is famous for its upmarket department stores. Renowned department stores across the country all have a presence here. You can find Matsuya Ginza, Ginza Mitsukoshi, Lumine, and Marui, to name just a few. Leading brand names in fashion, like Hermes, LV, Prada and Burberry can be found in this district. There is also a complex dedicated to low-cost brands like Uniqlo and GU. For those who fancy Japanese style furniture and groceries, you can find what you need in the large Loft and Muji stores at the Yurakucho Station nearby.
It is also worth mentioning that in this area you will find many specialty stores. The Hokkaido store is famous for hash browns and ice-cream. This district also harbors a variety of high-class Japanese restaurants including the celebrated Sukiyabashi Jiro, Beef Hotpot Kisoji and Imahan. Ginza receives as many visitors a year as the Champs-Elysees of Paris and Fifth Avenue in New York. It is featured in various films and TV programs.
